N.C. Constitutional Amendment One

Chatham Friends Meeting is a Quaker church that supports the passage of N.C. Constitutional Amendment One, which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Why do we support this amendment?

We believe that God is very clear in His Holy Scriptures about the sanctity of marriage and what constitutes a marriage.

Mark 10:6-7 “But when God made the world, 'he made them male and female. So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife," 

We believe that marriage is ordained of God and is a spiritual union in which man and woman are joined by God to live together as one.  Although some current societal trends seek to push acceptance of unions that stand directly in opposition to Scriptural directive, God has not changed HIS mind. 

We believe that God loves each of us equally but that does not mean that He loves our actions when they are clearly against His law. 

Amendment One is very simple, only two sentences:

“Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts." (NC SB-514 Defense of Marriage)

 Amendment One does not mean private parties, whatever sex they may be, cannot enter into private contracts or legal agreements.

 We believe that marriage between one man and one woman is central to the stability of our nation and its moral posture. 

We urge all North Carolinians to vote FOR Amendment One on May 8^th and help preserve the sanctity of marriage.
