N.C. Friends Disaster Service

What is North Carolina Friends Disaster Service?

(from the NCFDS informational brochure)

North Carolina Friends Disaster Service is an outreach ministry of North Carolina Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, historically known as Quakers.  Volunteers, services and contributions towards the work of NC FDS are representative of many different faiths.

When winds, flood, fire or some other disaster destroys or seriously damages a home, NC FDS is ready to respond to the under or non-insured.  It is through this service that volunteers—both men and women—with varying backgrounds and ages come together sharing their gifts of time, talents, and love, to build or repair a house for the family home.  It has been said that NC FDS does not just build houses but rebuilds lives.  It is through the support of many individuals’ prayers and financial contributions that this work continues.

Chatham Friends participate with N.C. Friends Disaster Relief

Greensburg, Kansas

October 13-21, 2007

Members of Chatham Friends Meeting have just returned from a very rewarding trip to Greensburg, Kansas.  Alex Braxton, Mike Braxton, Wayne Lamb, and Floyd McBane left on Saturday, October 13, 2007, to join approximately 70 other North Carolina Friends for a bus ride to Haviland Friends Church, Haviland, Kansas.  There they stayed and had meals while each morning traveling to nearby Greensburg, KS, to help rebuild homes following an F5 tornado which leveled the town in May, 2007.

On Wednesday, October 17th, the N.C.F.D.S. members were treated to a bar-b-que dinner with all the fixins’ given by Hogslat, Inc., headed up by Kevin Braden, General Manager, from Guymon, OK.  The pork for the meal was donated by Don Owens of Seaboard Foods in Guymon, OK.  It is with the help of businesses like these that N.C.F.D.S. is able to do what it does.

One home was near completion and much progress was made on two other homes during the week of October 15th-19th.  Students from Guilford College joined Friends from across North Carolina to build and set rafters, put up walls, mud sheetrock, roof, and backfill around homes.  Friends with special skills assisted with wiring and plumbing needs.

Upon completion of a home by N.C. Friends Disaster Service, the keys and a family Bible are presented to the owners of the home.  The intrinsic rewards to the volunteer members of North Carolina Friends Disaster Service who help with the building activities are priceless.

For information on upcoming NCFDS activities, please contact Wiley Shore, NCFDS Coordinator, at wshore@yadtel.net or by phone at 336/679-8466.
